About Us

GC Books local view

G C Books Ltd is based at Bladnoch, just one mile from Wigtown, Scotland’s National Book Town.  We currently have a stock of just over 30,000 books. The majority of our stock is second hand and includes a varied range of subjects. Our largest catalogues are Scottish interest, history, theology, transport, antiquarian and topography.

G C Books is also a publisher of local history titles.  We welcome enquiries from authors, new and established, of books relevant to southern Scotland. Our most recent publications are Edinburgh and Lothians – Exploring the Lost Railways by Alasdair Wham and Solway Sunrise : The Complete Ferryman Stories, edited by Desmond Batley.  Willie Hughes was The Ferryman from Creetown in South West Scotland, his stories about wildfowling and punt gunning on the Solway Firth  were originally published in The Shooting Times and Country Magazine during the 1960s and 70s.

We offer a free book search service – simply complete the form with as much information as possible and our team of experienced staff will search for the book.  We will email or telephone you within two working days of your request being received with the result of the search.

We accept visitors to the warehouse by appointment only.  If you are looking for specialist material we are happy to help, our stock is organized by number so that we can fulfill internet orders quickly and efficiently, rather than by subject but we will happily provide a list of the numbers indexed to a particular subject and assist with locating them but browsing our stock in the traditional sense is not easy.  We are adding to our stock all the time and items relevant to your enquiry may not yet have been indexed so please do not hesitate to ask.

G C Books also sell pallets of second hand books. The pallets vary in content however they will generally hold over 700 books in manageable size boxes. The books are in a fair to very good condition and are suitable for selling on internet sites e.g. Abe Books, Amazon and Alibris, auction sites e.g. Ebay, market stalls or boot fairs. Buyers can collect or we can arrange delivery.  If you would like further information please contact us.

Solway Books is located opposite the harbour car park in the centre of the town. Opening hours - 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday. The shop stock is divided between new and second hand books. A great place to find local history titles, Scottish fiction, biographies and holiday reads to name but a few. The second hand stock is regularly refreshed to ensure returning visitors are not disappointed. Look out for our special biannual fiction sale in the spring and autumn – a huge table of hardback fiction with prices as low as £1.50 each or 4 for £5.00.
