Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library was launched in May 2008 with a party in the County Buildings, Wigtown. The UK project was first introduced in Rotherham in 2007 by Dolly and it was decided that the Machars area of Galloway (with Wigtown as the base) would be the first area in Scotland to benefit. The programme supplies a free book every month to children under the age of five in a bid to boost literacy skills. The scheme was part-funded and run by the organisers of the Wigtown Book Festival Wigtown Cultural Heritage Project began in 1996. A computerised database was constructed which relates to Wigtown people, places and events from the late 17th to the early 20th century. The database can be accessed at Machars Action, 26 South Main Street, Wigtown.
