New Memoir by Kirkcudbright family

Posted on Thursday, 22 July 2010 11:27AM by Jayne Baldwin
In 2004, within a month of her 101st birthday, Freda Gordon-Hall died in Palnackie near Kirkcudbright. She left behind an autobiography written during her retirement which she had always hoped to publish. That ambition has finally realised through her son Robert Crewdson, also of Kirkcudbright, who has published the memoir with the help of GC Books.
'Part of the Garment' is the result of careful editing by Mr Crewdson who tackled the lengthy manuscript and captured the essence of his mother's extraordinary memories of her childhood years before and during the Great War. Her remarkably candid and perceptive writing details the difficulties of her parents' mismatched marriage from a child's perspective. Her mother was an artist, bohemian and suffragist; her father a decorated career soldier. With a wonderful eye for detail Freda, in this book, recalls her life in Edwardian London and Canada. It makes fascinating reading giving the modern reader an insight into a world now lost to living memory.
'Part of the Garment' by Freda Gordon-Hall (162 pages, paperback) is available from GC Books and our sister company Solway Books in Kirkcudbright price £14.50.
